Lazy Boots Western Dancers Valentine Festival 2008 (15th - 17th Feb 08)
The weather this year was good to us, no snow and no rain, but it was very cold though. Not to worry, we were not planning any outdoor events and we managed to get the ballroom warmed up sufficiently. Our guest stallholders this weekend were Liz & Norman Holding from Dreamweavers and they brought along a huge selection of hats, boots, skirts shirts and all manner of sparkly stuff. As usual, Stuart started the disco up at about 3.30pm on the Friday afternoon to give people a chance to practice some of their favourite dances before the weekend started in earnest. On Friday night we were entertained by Double Whiskey, Bob Schwarz and Ron Pitt. They played 3 fabulous sets of good old country music, with a few modern favourites thrown in too. The dancers had a great time, the floor was full all night. As is the norm at Lazy Boots events we had a bit of a laugh during the raffle and the usual 'Naff' prize. Tonight it was a Cadbury's Roses tin filled with rocks, however, there was some compensation for Sharon who had been looking forward to munching through some chocolates, she also received a bottle of wine. Stuart filled in the gaps between Double Whiskey's sets with the disco (lots of requests), but all too soon it was time for the boys to pack up and head back to Norfolk. Stuart kept the disco going till about 1.00am by which time everyone was ready for bed. On Saturday, Terry & Caroline French had the first teaching spot in the morning with a partner dance 'Rollin' With The Flow' to a beautiful track of the same name by Mark Chesnutt (he has been putting out some great songs recently). Ken & Dorothy were up next with Ken taking the lead teaching a fun line dance 'Bay Walking Blues' to the Eric Clapton track 'San Francisco Bay Blues' (from the 'Unplugged' album). Once everyone had mastered the steps and got a chance to hear the music it was time for us all to join in on kazoo in the instrumental break. After a break for lunch, Terry taught a line dance for the Mark Chesnutt song 'Rollin' With The Flow' so we were able to have both line and partner dancing together. Ken & Dorothy's partner dance this afternoon was the new dance from Angela Pinnington and Peter Kimber (who were among the assembled guests). The dance was 'My Side of The Story' to the beautiful Suzy Bogguss track of the same name. According to Angela, Ken & Dorothy did an excellent job of interpreting and teaching the dance. Then, to finish of the dance instruction for Saturday, Terry taught 'Drunk'n Love Waltz, a line dance to the Kenny Chesney track 'Being Drunk's A Lot Like Loving You', a lovely little waltz. Before breaking to get ready for the evening, there was time to have a quick recap of the morning dances (and have a bit more kazoo practice!!). Our guest band for Saturday night was Cactus River (Ellie & Bernie Nichols plus Callum Judge) and what a fabulous trio. Fun and banter and excellent music was the pattern for the whole evening, with each of Ellie, Bernie and Callum taking a turn on vocals on a huge range of country songs both old and new. In the breaks Stuart continued to work through the long list of requests that had been handed in, hopefully keeping everyone happy with a wide mix of line and partner music. On Sunday morning, Terry taught the line dance 'Rebel Amor' followed by Ken & Dorothy with another partner dance 'Heart Beats' the new dance by Pim Humphrey. There was time for recaps of all the dances taught on Saturday together with with more social dancing and a final wrap up of requests. At 1pm, Stuart brought the weekend to a close with 'Best Of Friends' and then it was time for a full Sunday lunch. Throughout the weekend the food and service from the hotel was excellent and many of the guests were fortunate to benefit from the room refurbishment programme which the hotel plan to complete in the summer.
