Lazy Boots Western Dancers Halloween Festival 2007  (26th - 28th Oct 2007)

Report

With some unexpectedly mild weather the weekend kicked off on Friday with live music from Hard Tack & Steel.  Playing a wide variety of country music the kept the dancers busy all night.  We did have a bit of drama during the evening when Brenda slipped on the dance floor and had a bad fall.  We would like to say thank you to everyone for their understanding and patience while we waited for the paramedics to arrive and take Brenda for a check up at the local hospital, thankfully there were no problems and she got back to the Holiday Camp about 2am.  Thanks also to Hard Tack and Steel, who despite taking to the stage 45 mins later than planned for the last set, performed a full set and 2 encores!!

On Saturday morning the dance instruction started with a lovely partner dance, South of Santa Fe, from our guest instructors for the weekend, Ron & Ann Williams.  Terry & Caroline then taught a line and a partner dance to the same piece of music, Baby Jane from Paul Bailey.

For our Saturday lunchtime performer we had Steve Chase who entertained us brilliantly with his humour and fabulous music.  Through the remainder of the afternoon we had further dance instruction, Ann Williams taught the line dance Here and Now to the Darryl Worley Track of the same name, and Terry taught another partner dance to a Paul Bailey song, The Last To Know.  Our evening band, The Saloon Drifters, turned up early having only been down the road at Woolacombe in Devon the night before, so they enlisted help from Steve Chase as a roadie to bring their gear in!!

Saturday night with the Saloon Drifters and the Fancy Dress competition, what a night again.  The costumes yet again were outstanding, winners in the categories were:  Best Male - Alan Bailey as Frankenstein's Monster, Best Female - Ruth Armitage as the Red Witch, and Best Couple - Bill & Jane Turner as Zombie Wedding Couple.  In the first break we also had a visit from the Ghost Riders!!

The Saloon Drifters, John & Neil, were outstanding as always, even dressing up for the occasion as well, though there were some comments that John didn't need a mask.  They rocked us through the night with a string of terrific country hits and classics that had everyone dancing, tapping their feet or singing along with them.  John was on top form with the banter and had plenty of likely targets for his put downs and insults, but he did get some back as well - in spades!!.

Sunday morning brought the final dance instruction sessions with Ron & Ann teaching the partner dance Here And Now Together which goes to the same track as the line dance Ann taught on Saturday, and Terry teaching the line dance Ride The River to the track of the same name from the excellent Eric Clapton & JJ Cale album The Road to Escondido.  We recapped all of the dances from Saturday before it was time to play and dance Best Of Friends to bring the weekend to a close.

Big thank yous from Ann & myself as always to the Lazy Boots Festival Team:- Ken & Dorothy Harrison, Terry & Caroline French, Margaret White & Katy Holland.  Our thanks and appreciation also go to the management and staff at St Audries Bay Holiday Club who work so hard behind the scenes to make the events so successful.  And finally a big thank you to all who attended the festival for being so prepared to join in and have fun with us - you make it so worthwhile.
